Field Notes: Hurricane Earl packing winds at around 145 mph …updated 3 hours ago

Images as Hurricane Earl races toward the Eastern seaboard of the United States: Thousands of tourists fleeing Cape Hatteras; a local hotel with a sign that says “Earl you are not welcome here”; and homeowners along the coast battening down the hatches.

But there’s one group that is excited for the storm’s approach, as the New York Times noted today: East Coast surfers, who are accustomed to envying their peers in places with larger waves, such as California or Hawaii.

Hurricane season is one of the rare times when East Coast waves can reach world-class heights.

As of Thursday morning, Earl, a Category 4 storm, was packing winds at around 145 miles per hour. The storm is located about 410 miles south of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and is moving north-northwest near 18 mph, on a path that seemed certain to delight surfers from Florida to New England.

While watches and warnings were posted along the Atlantic coast for most of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and part of Massachusetts, surf cams on websites such as Surfline.com show top breaks along the coast packed with surfers enjoying the larger-than-usual waves.

Oahu’s South Shore and North Shore Competition

   August 26th, 2010 | View Comments »

Red Bull Rivalry heats up Oahu, Hawaii

Competition between Oahu’s South Shore and North Shore to take place on Sandy Beach

red-bull-rivals-2010-poster1

WHAT: Red Bull Rivals is a one day surf event pitting Oahu’s legendary shores, North Shore and South Shore, against each other.  Top surfers from each shore will battle it out in a head-to-head surf competition for ultimate island bragging rights.  To keep things fair, the event will again be held on the Eastside of Oahu at Sandy Beach, which is neutral territory.  Before the Red Bull Rivals 2009 competition, no surf event had been held at this popular surf location since the Gotcha Pro back in the early ’80s.  Instead of a traditional purse prize, the teams will compete for each others’ surfboards used in the competition (similar to racing for pink slips) and, of course, the winning team will earn the ultimate surfing bragging rights.

Ten surfers for each team were chosen by the public via an online poll.  Each shore’s team has to include at least one female surfer and two groms.  A “ringer” will be allowed to be a part of each team and does not have to be disclosed until day of competition; the “ringer” can be any surfer from anywhere in the world.
