Organized international surfing competitions for men and women began in 1953 and marked the “official birth” of the sport of surfing. The Waikiki Surf Club hosted the first competition in Makaha, Hawaii. Points awarded by judges were decidedly given and awarded for the length of the ride, skill, sportsmanship, number of waves caught, and grace and style on the board.

The Australian Surfriders Association hosted the first world championships at Sydney in 1964. The surfers formed and founded the International Surfing Federation during that contest. Their primary function was to organize world championships. In 1976, the International Surfing Association (ISA) then superseded the federation. In 1982, the General Association of International Sports Federation gave it’s recognition to the ISA as the world’s governing body. In 1995, thirteen years later, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) granted the ISA provisional recognition. Finally in 1997, two years later, the IOC confirmed and admitted the ISA in to the world’s most prestigious sports Olympic movement.
