Stoked: Coolangatta’s Blake Ainsworth wins a wildcard into the 2010 Quiksilver Pro

COOLANGATTA surfer Blake Ainsworth has earned the last remaining wildcard into the main draw of the Quiksilver Pro after winning today’s trials at Snapper Rocks.

The 19-year-old took control in the tricky 1-1.5m waves at the famous right-hand pointbreak, posting a combined two-wave score of 15.65 to defeat North Narrabeen youngster Davey Cathels (14.75), France’s ASP junior world champion Maxime Huscenot (14.15) and Gold Coast surfer Clint Kmmins (4.75).

Ainsworth, who is currently sitting eighth on the ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series, will now meet world No.2 Joel Parkinson in Round 1 when the big guns come out to play as early as tomorrow for the start of the official waiting period.

Meanwhile, 15-year-old Lennox Head surfer Tyler Wright took out the Roxy Pro trials for the last remaining wildcard into the women’s draw.

The highly-touted teenager dominated the trials, finishing the final with a combined two-wave score of 18.50 to defeat Sunshine Coast surfer Dimity Stoyle (12.35), New Zealand-born Gold Coaster Sarah Mason (10.50) and Merewethers Phillipa Anderson (7.65)

As the younger sister of recently qualified mens rookie sensation Owen Wright, the siblings will create history this weekend by becoming the first brother and sister to compete in the same ASP World Tour event.

Contest organisers are predicting good conditions tomorrow, and will make a call before 8am whether they will send the men’s Quiksilver Pro or the women’s Roxy Pro into action.
